Interlyceales and tournaments

During the year, our students participate in various interlyceals and tournaments. They often come incredibly far here and sometimes even win prizes themselves. Read all about these interlyceals and tournaments here.

Singapore International Mathematical & Computational Challenge

An LCL team consisting of Remmo Klaver, Oliver Li and Yu Hao Lin will participate in the Singapore International Mathematical & Computational Challenge, a prestigious team-based competition in mathematics and programming, from Monday, May 20 to Friday, May 24, 2024.

After a direct flight of almost 15 hours with arrival in Singapore on Sunday morning, there was one day to explore this impressive metropolis. The same day was to deal with jet lag and get used to the extreme climate on the equator! That all seems to have worked out well.

On Monday was the opening ceremony and then introductory activities and lectures were scheduled. Forty-two schools from 27 countries are participating.

On Tuesday, the competition will start. Students will then work 30 hours (non-stop, but sleeping in between is allowed) on the challenge. On Wednesday they have to hand in their report at the end of the afternoon, after which on Thursday they will defend their findings in several presentations in front of various judges.

Good luck Remmo, Oliver and Yu Hao!

Olympiad party

Last Tuesday, April 16, 2024, we ended the olympiad season with a celebration. Students and their parents were welcome for drinks in the C auditorium. There the students were able to receive their certificates and certificates. What toppers they are!

Second prize at Math B day

An LCL team consisting of Olivia Abbo, Tristan Tangdiongga, Lucia Zhou Jiang and Sofia Zhou Jiang won second prize at the Mathematics B Day '23-'24. Over 4,000 students participated in this competition on Friday, Nov. 10, 2023. After an intensive judging process, the eight best teams were invited to the award ceremony.

Our students received their prize on Friday, March 22 in the stately Academy Building of Utrecht University on Domplein. The ceremony was followed by a tour of the impressive senate hall from 1636 and the chapter house, where the Union of Utrecht was signed in 1579. The evening ended with a fancy dinner on site.

In the Mathematics B day, students in teams of four spend an entire day researching an open problem that calls on computational and algorithmic skills. Schools may submit their best research papers. The Mathematics B-day takes place simultaneously at schools in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Slovakia. The organization in the Netherlands is in the hands of the UU.

Dutch Mathematics Olympiad

The Lorentz Casimir Lyceum has won the school prize of the Dutch Mathematics Olympiad 2024! With an extremely minimal lead of 1 point over the Stedelijk Gymnasium Leiden and 3 points over the Willem Lodewijk Gymnasium from Groningen, our six best students managed to post the highest sum score (174) in a field of 310 participating schools. Team LCL consisted of Remmo Klaver (V5, 30 points), Jurre Klomp (V5, 29 points), Oliver Li (V4, 34 points), Yu Hao Lin (V4, 27 points), Dennis Zhang (V3, 31 points) and Willem van der Velden (V2, 23 points).

Since the introduction of the schools prize in 1980, our school has won it most often of all schools in the Netherlands, in 1993, 1995 (then as Lorentz Lyceum), 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2024. This makes the LCL the Real Madrid of the Dutch Mathematics Olympiad.

European Olympiad of Experimental Science (EOES)

On Jan. 25 and 26, the national final round of the European Olympiad of Experimental Science (EOES) took place at HAN University of Applied Sciences in Nijmegen. The mixed schools team consisting of Jochem Kistemaker (Stedelijk Gymnasium, Schiedam), Robert Stepanyan (Trevianum, Sittard) and Kjeld Zwitserloot (Gymnasium Beekvliet, Sint-Michielsgestel) won this national final round. Second place went to the mixed schools team consisting of Imre Bekkering (Willem Lodewijk Gymnasium, Groningen), Ralph de Boer (Lorentz Casimir Lyceum, Eindhoven) and Matthijs de Ruiter (Stedelijk Gymnasium, Nijmegen).

The two winning teams will represent the Netherlands at the EOES-2024 to be held in Luxembourg from April 7 to 14, with almost all EU countries participating.

Final N.K. school chess

On Tuesday, January 23, a chess team from the LCL in Scheveningen finished in fifth place in the finals of the Dutch school chess championships in category VO-I (all grade levels). Against all odds, Elysia Feng (V5c), Polina Kulikova (V4e), Theo Qi (V6d) and Freek Thijssen (G1b) had managed to qualify for this final through the qualifying tournaments in November and December, in which nearly 500 students from over 80 VO schools participated.

The final took place in a posh hall of the AFAS Circustheater in Scheveningen. Between the games there was an opportunity to take a look at the world's top players, who played their games in the ninth round of the Tata Steel grandmaster tournament at the same location. All in all, an intensive but beautiful day.
