Quite a lot of students at our school like math. Every year about a hundred of our students take part in the first round of the Dutch Mathematics Olympiad. They try to solve as many problems as possible, you might say brainteasers. And often with success. Students of the Lorentz Casimir Lyceum have won the school ranking of the Dutch Mathematics Olympiad seven times already. No other school in the Netherlands even comes close!
At our school, you can also participate, for example, in the Kangaroo competition, which you may know from elementary school. As a team, our students take part in the Undergraduate Mathematics Day and in the upper grades in the Mathematics A Olympiad and the Mathematics B Day. On these days, teams of four students spend an entire day working on a project that tackles an open problem, often around a current social issue, from a mathematical perspective.
Sometimes a student or a team from our school even does so well that they are invited to math events abroad. For example, one of our students went to both Slovenia and Japan in 2023 for an international math competition. Also, students from the LCL have participated with a team in the biennial Singapore International Mathematics Challenge four times in the past decade.
